Leonard Courtney
Graveside services Leonard Courtney, 97, Dora, Missouri, will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 15, 2017 at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Olden, Missouri, under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.
Mr. Courtney entered into eternal rest at 4:32 a.m., Monday, July 10, 2017 at Brooke Haven Health Care.
He was born September 21, 1919, at Pomona, Missouri, to Thomas Seman Courtney and Nettie Mae Moore Courtney. He was married on January 5, 1946, at Reno, Nevada, to Hester Naomi Sams, who preceded him in death on December 25, 1998. He worked in the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) from 1939 to 1942. Mr. Courtney was a veteran, having served with the United States Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theatre on USS Downes from 1943 to 1945. Before his retirement, he worked as a mechanic in West Plains. He loved gardening, family and spending time with his grandkids; he loved farm life and living in the country. Mr. Courtney was baptized in 1968 at the First Baptist Church in West Plains and was a member of Union Grove Church, Dora, Missouri, where he attended for many years.
He is survived by one daughter, Tamara Courtney Laxton; two grandchildren, Heather Whittingham and husband, Jeremy and Dustin Laxton and wife, Alyssa; four great-grandchildren, Zevi Whittingham, Laney Brown, Zachary Whittingham and Noah Whittingham; one nephew, Gene Courtney and wife, Betty; and a very special niece, Marie Jackson and husband, Tom.
His parents, wife, one infant son, Steven Len Courtney, three brothers and one sister, preceded him in death.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Friday, at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Union Grove Church Ladies Auxiliary and may be left at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.

I remember Mr. Courtney from when I was a kid running around with Tammy. He was a great guy. My thoughts are with the family at this very difficult time.

Tammy, I am so sorry to hear you Daddy has passed too. I remember he and your momma, Hester so well. I worked with her later at West Vue. But as kids we’d go to Holland s market and carry those heavy glass gallon jars of Proffitt’s milk home , one in each hand. I think your poor Daddy was afraid we would drop them every time. As we were headed to the store more than once, he gave us an ice-cream. Fudge bar, popcicle or the such. He was a fantastic gentleman. I loved to hear him laugh. You were a sweetheart always too. I love you and am praying for you all in this time of sorrow.
